THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MINERAL AND CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS
With so many choices of sunscreen formulas to choose from today, it's important to understand what the differences are. The two main choices of active ingredients in most sunscreens are mineral and chemical. However, each of these active ingredients works very differently in helping to protect your skin from the sun's damaging UV rays.
MINERAL = PHYSICAL BARRIERMineral sunscreens contain one or both of the two active ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These minerals offer protection by forming a physical barrier on the surface of the skin to deflect UV rays. When the mineral particles in the sunscreen

CHEMICAL = ABSORPTIONChemical sunscreens contain a combination of two to six different chemicals that offer protection by absorption into the skin, to then absorb UV rays. Many studies have shown the dangers of these chemicals being absorbed by the body and into the bloodstream because they can cause hormone disruption, immune dysfunction and allergies. |

HARMFUL CHEMICALS IN SUNSCREENThese chemical ingredients are commonly found in most of the sunscreens on the market today, and many studies have shown them to be neurotoxins. This means that they are endocrine (hormone) disruptors that can cause damage to cells by bio-accumulating in the body. These chemicals have been shown to be harmful to the human body, as well as the environment. |

Hawaiian lawmakers recently passed legislation banning the sale of chemical sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. These chemicals are found in 70% of sunscreens, and have been linked to interfering with the hormones of corals within the reefs, causing them to bleach. |
OUR SUNSCREEN IS MINERAL ZINC OXIDE - NO CHEMICALS!
We are against risking the harmful effects of chemical sunscreens that are absorbed into the skin and can bioaccumulate in the body as neurotoxins and endocrine disruptors. Our sunscreen is an organic, non-nano zinc oxide that protects by being on the surface of your skin. We are proud of our safe mineral sunscreen and always feel confident when putting it on ourselves and our family because we know it's best.
Is Higher SPF Better?
Higher SPF levels in chemical-based sunscreens do not protect your skin better than an SPF 30 mineral-based sunscreen. In fact, the higher the SPF level of a chemical sunscreen, the higher the levels of harmful sun-filtering chemicals it contains, and more the body will have to absorb.
